I designed a typography book using the screenplay of the movie 12 Years A Slave. I chose specific typefaces and experimental typography to convey the actions and emotions in the movie. My intent was to have the reader be able to know what was happening and the emotions in the movie by reading the book. I used expressive typography to show the more intense moments in the storyline such as whippings and emotions such as despair and panic. The movie itself is such a beautiful film despite the dark subject matter and I wanted a book that is also beautiful and classic in style.
To explore methods for expressive typography I choose to print some of the phrases from dramatic scenes. On the printed phrases I emulated the physical happenings in the scene. For example, the whipping scenes I slashed the paper with a blade.
